What is the Bike Bus?

The Bike Bus is a group of students and parents who ride their bikes to school together along set routes. Think of it like a school bus—only on two wheels! Riders meet at neighborhood stops and pedal as a group to Stedman.

Why a Bike Bus?

Because riding together is fun, safe, and healthy! The Bike Bus builds community, helps kids practice safe biking skills, and makes mornings more joyful. Plus, fewer cars around the school means cleaner air and safer streets for everyone.

Stedman Bike Bus FAQ’s

But driving would be faster/easier…Why should my kids join the Bike Bus?

Biking (and other forms of active transportation) are shown to improve the health, wellbeing, and academic performance of students. Biking together builds community among participants and also connects riders with the community along the route. Decreased car traffic improves the air quality of our neighborhoods and makes our streets safer for all users. But mostly, riding with the Bike Bus will be FUN!

Who can ride?

Anyone! Kids in grades kindergarten through 1st grade need to have a parent with them. Older kids may ride alone with parent/guardian permission. All kids are expected to know and follow the rules of the road and listen to adults in the group.

What’s the pace?

We’ll aim for 7-10mph; this tends to be a good pace for kids.

Can I scooter, roller blade, etc.?

Yes! Any and all small wheels are welcome! Adults on e-bikes are welcome.

There’s no route from my neighborhood, how can I get involved?

We’d love to help you add a new route to the Stedman Bike Bus! But you can also join in by biking or driving to one of our routes. The East route starts in a parking lot which makes it easy for people to arrive by car and unload their bikes. You can also park a few blocks from school and join the Stedman Bike Bus routes from there. Even short rides are great practice and exercise for kids and help with car congestion around the school.

What should I wear?

Dress for the weather! Wear your helmet. Bright colors and high visibility gear are recommended but not required. Bells, streamers etc. are always fun!

Are Bike Buses safe?

Generally speaking, yes. We take the lane and have parents blocking car traffic at all intersections. Additionally, strength in numbers helps make a bike bus very visible on the road. However, bicycling on city streets carries risks. Please read (and sign) our waiver and know you're assuming your own risks by joining the Bike Bus.

I’m still a bit nervous about having my child join the ride.
Let’s talk about it! Reach out to us.
